The Toilet Shell - $71.29/family

We decided to create a toilet shell that looks like this:

Model Diagram on the left and a real life home made version on the right.

Model Diagram on the left and a real life home made version on the right.

It's made out a few parts including:

Items That Make Toilet Shell.

The reason why we chose the trapdoor mechanism you see in the 2nd picture above on the righthand side is that this is how we'll reduce odor from coming out of our toilet and to make sure we don't attract insects by keeping it open. We've also made our toilet out of synthetic plywood since termites and other bugs will only feed on pure wood, however, we've added a coating just to make sure that the urine does not seep through it/the wood gets wet and decomposes.

Transporting The Toilet Shell - $3.80/family (1st month only).

Once we get this toilet shell we'll transport it to the user using a rental truck. A 15-tonne truck costs $160 to rent/ day and has a volume of 17 cubic meters of space. One of our toilets has a volume of 0.37 cubic meters meaning we can fit 45 families toilets in this tuck, meaning for each family it'll cost $3.55 to ship the toilet shel l over. The fuel efficiency of the 15-tonne truck that we'll use to transport the charcoal is 35L/100km assuming it carries 20,000 lbs (low ball according to this) but all the toilets fitted in the truck will only weigh 3,360lbs so we know that if the truck comes filled up with 35 liters we can now travel anywhere from 500km - 750km (being conservative) which is more enough for us to get to the users household!

Using The Toilet Shell - $13.70/family (first month only) → $6.70/family for all months after.

The toilet will be put into the family's home and we know that it'll fit inside because they have a living space of 450 square meters and our toilet takes up 100 square meters. They'll be using it for 15 days and it'll stay odorless as we have a trapdoor:

Families will obviously need to clean themselves after using the toilet and they will do this using toilet paper. We will be providing each family with 40 rolls of toilet paper as the average person goes through 100 rolls of toilet paper in a year so in a month that means they'll go through 8 rolls and since there are 5 people per family that means we need 40 rolls of toilet paper. On jumia a pack of 48 sheets costs $8.04 USD so that means for 40 rolls we'll have to pay an extra $6.70/month to have this. We also need to pay for a bin to hold all this and based on the size

Picking Up The Feces - $5.49/family/month

Then we'll pay someone $1.31 (A half a day worth of wage of a labour worker in Nigeria, this job will take 3 hours max, but we're highballing) to remove the bucket of feces in the toilet and put it inside the truck that'll take the feces bucket to the warehouse in which it'll be turned into charcoal. While they're doing this they'll have to wear gloves, a mask & a PPE suit and the total cost for all these three things is $4.18 (gloves, mask & suit).

Transporting The Feces - $5.49/family/month

Once it gets put inside the truck we'll transport it to 10 Oregun Road, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria which is the warehouse in which we'll refine & package the charcoal. The fuel efficiency of the 15-tonne truck we'll use to transport the charcoal is 35L/100km assuming it carries 20,000 lbs (low ball according to this).

Since we're going to Lagos (200km away) the price will be double the 100km rate. The cost for gas in Nigeria is $0.454/L.

$0.454/L * 35L = $15.89/100km = $31.78/200km + $159.99 for truck rental = $191.78 total for one trip/month.

Cost per family: $191.78 / 227 families charcoal that can fit inside one truck (12,000 lbs per trip (we're lowballing from 20,000 lbs incase there's extra weight we don't know about) / 52.8 pounds of charcoal/family = 227 families in one truck) = $0.85 per family/trip .

Feces → Charcoal & Transporting The Charcoal - $1.02/month

Turning Feces → Charcoal - $5.49/family/month

To build a kiln that turns feces into charcoal & refine it it'll cost us $2,000 - $3,000 one time which includes shipping, labour, and the actual kiln itself. Seeing as this is a one-time purchase that is quite a bit of money we will cover this with grant funds raised to not include this in the per family per month calculations. We do need to pay 17 cents for the wood used as fuel for this kiln

Packaging Charcoal - $0.89/family/month

Once we have the refined charcoal we'll be paying $0.74 [Salary Link] for someone to package it inside a bag, and this bag will cost us $0.15 [Alibaba Link].

Selling The Charcoal - $1.20 /family/month

Now that everything is packaged it'll cost us $60 to get 50 families to find and buy us on Jumia from previous google ad marketing campaigns this is the average amount spent per 50 families so our CAC is $1.20. It's free for us to sign-up and sells on Jumiya's website, according to [this](https://blog.jumia.com.ng/want-sell-jumia-easy-sign-5mins/#:~:text=Step 1%3A Fill the registration, five Products and start selling.). We also will have contracts for this so likely will even be $0 but just highballing.

Once they buy Jumiya will come to our warehouse and send it to the consumer since they cover last-mile delivery.

Picking Up The Urine - $4.66/family (1st time) → $1.31/family/month (2nd month onward)

Then we'll pay someone $1.31 (A half a day worth of wage of a labour worker in Nigeria, this job will take 3 hours max) to remove the bucket of urine in the toilet and load it into the truck that will take this to a lab. It'll be the same person for feces so this way we don't have to buy new PPE equipment.

The user can still use the toilet because we will send in another bucket to replace the one that is going to the lab and we will need 3 lbs of polyethylene to make this bucket which will cost $3.35.

Transporting The Urine - $5.53/family/month

Once it gets put inside the truck we then transport it to 13 BLOCK N, RD. OPP. HASKE BAPTIST CHURCH, LAMINGO which is the lab where we'll turn the urine into ammonium sulfate. The fuel efficiency of the 15-tonne truck we'll use to transport the urine is 35L/100km assuming it carries 20,000 lbs (low ball according to this).

Since this lab is in the same state, assuming the user is on the complete opposite side of plateau, 300km, and the cost for gas in Nigeria is $0.454/L.

$0.454/L * 35L = $15.89/100km = $47.67/300km + $159.99 for truck rental = $207.67 total for one trip/month.

Cost per family: $207.67 / 37.5 families urine buckets that can fit inside one truck (assuming we're carrying only 18,000 lbs per trip (we're lowballing from 20,000 lbs in case there's an extra weight we don't know about) / 480 pounds of urine/family/month = 37.5 families in one truck) = $5.53 per family/trip.

Urine → Ammonium Sulfate (AS) - $4.12/family/month

All the tools needed (beakers, stirring rod, calcium hydroxide, ceramic diffuser, and sulfuric acid) will be at the lab. The only thing we'd need to pay for is access to a lab which will be <$412.89 USD/Month and can hold around 100 families urine per month so it's 4.12 USD per family per month.

See technical procedure document

Packaging The AS - $0.86/family/month

Once we have the ammonium sulfate in the lab bottle, we will package it in the lab since we're not producing a lot of ammonium sulfate it's only 0.0567 kg per family, and this labour will cost us $0.74 [Salary Link] and $0.12 for the bags [Bag Link] that we're using for every family.

Selling The AS - $0.02/family/month

Now that everything's packaged it'll cost us $0 to find someone to buy our ammonium sulfate because we're going to be selling our ammonium sulfate to local gardening centers in Nigeria rather than spending money on ads. The price to ship this from our warehouse to them is $0.02. This is because of the calculations below and we're basing our calculations on per family per month.

How much money are we making families?

A family per month is making 120lbs of feces and if we convert 100% of this into charcoal it'll sell for $130USD in Nigeria. Since not all of the feces is carbon our kiln can only convert 44% of the feces into charcoal meaning we'll make 52.8 lbs of charcoal that'll sell for $57.2. For the ammonium sulfate, we know that 1kg of ammonium sulfate sells for $66.63 and since each, we produce 0.0567kg per person that means we make $3.84 per person per month and this is assuming that they're peeing the minimum amount of pee (800mL compared to 2,000mL) so in the average Nigerian family of 5 ppl that means we're making each family an extra $19.20.
